Conclusion and Reflections

Modernization started to take effect since industrialization happened in Istanbul, and continued even in post-industrialization period. Istanbul, as a glorious capital of a great empire before, always has ambition to show its strength to the world. Factories left until today are evidence of early industrialization, thus become containers of the official collective memory.

Currently, modernization is no more industrialization, but has evolved to have more meanings, including “culture”. When the influence of modernization becomes different in the context of socioeconomic transformations, Istanbul has to find out a cultural way of expression in this globalization period. Transformation from factories to heritages shows this idea change.

However, in the transformation where modernization becomes a part of people’s daily life from an invasion, the physical buildings are still far from completing the integration. Most of the reconstruction are not conducted for local people, but a representation of national culture and identity in the context of globalization. It is a worldwide problem that heritages are “abused” and isolated from public daily life, becoming a tool to pursue general welfare. It needs to be realized and improved in the future.
